Recycling and Environmental Studies

The Frank and Ramona Holmes Scholarship was set up to honor Frank and Ramona for all their many years of volunteering and leadership with HFR. The scholarship of $500 is offered to students with a declared interest in environmental science, recycling and/or related fields of study.

Due Date: same as Haines High School scholarship due date.

Eligibility requirements:
1. Personal or family membership in HFR.
2. A Haines Borough graduating senior or college student with a declared interest and working toward a degree (BA, BS, AA, AS,
or graduate level) in an area of environmental studies or enrolled in a special program related to such.
3. Evidence of enrollment in a program listed above.
4. Demonstration of commitment to the need for sustainable community action through volunteer work, employment or research.
5. A letter of request and intent: financial need and benefit, planned course of study, description of career goals, related activities.
6. Two or more letters of reference that can verify history and career plans.
7. Verification of GPA of 2.5 or greater with relevant courses included.
Scholarship may be applied for and renewed if a cumulative GPA of 2.75 is maintained.

Recipients are requested to submit relevant documents or a letter of success and accomplishments related to the scholarship
to the HFR Board.

Bill Aronson Memorial Scholarship

Haines Friends of Recycling,
Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Studies

The Bill Aronson scholarship is in honor of the late Bill Aronson for his volunteer work with HFR and his interest in renewable energy and energy conservation. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance for college, university, or post-secondary education. The scholarship is open to members of HFR or children of HFR members.

Eligible applicants are:
1. Haines High school students or graduates who have been admitted to a post secondary institution for the purpose of studying
climate change, energy efficient construction, or renewable energy design and installation; or
2. Haines residents who plan to attend training in either energy efficient construction or renewable energy design and installation.
The Haines residents must have been residents of Haines for 5 years and have at least 5 years of experience in construction or
using/designing/installing renewable energy equipment; or
3. Haines High School seniors who demonstrated leadership and activism in waste reduction and recycling while in high school and who intend to continue their activism in college or university.

Scholarships are limited to a maximum of $500 per application.

Successful applicants will need to turn in relevant documentation of their training or education along with receipts. They are also
expected to make a presentation at either the next Earth Day event or similar venue.
